Vellux Blankets

vellux.jpgIn my experience, people either really like vellux or they really don’t. Admittedly, this is limited experience I am speaking from: it is not as if I go around questioning all my friends on the topic. In fact, I think what I am working from here is that I really like vellux, and my mother-in-law really doesn’t.

I like vellux blankets because they’re easy to wash, they hold up even if you wash them again and again, and they’re quick in the dryer. Anyone with a bedwetter is going to find vellux a handy kind of blanket for a child’s bed.

I found some vellux blankets on Amazon.com, but the reviews were patchy: some people said the blankets practically dissolved in the washing machine, some said the blankets were thin. But others said they had no problems and that the blankets were thick. I was desperate, so I took a chance and ordered one. It did not dissolve in the wash, and it’s as good as any vellux blanket I’ve bought before.

I paid $20 for it, but now they’re marked down to $11.99. Furthermore, they qualify for the “4-for-3″ promotion, which means if you buy four blankets, one of them is free: you get four blankets for $36, or $9 per blanket. And since the order is over $25, the shipping is free. You can mix and match if you don’t need four blankets, but be careful not to have other, cheaper 4-for-3 items in your cart: I allllmost checked out with the blankets plus a $2.50 coloring book, and then noticed the COLORING BOOK was the free item.

The only complaint I have with the blanket I bought is that the color was not quite as represented: the one I chose was Buttercup, and the color is more like Butter. This was not a huge deal, but if you’re trying to match something, it’s good to know that the color may not be quite the way you expect. I ordered four more blankets yesterday in Cranberry, Rose (2) and New Navy, so I’ll update when they arrive to report on color accuracy. [Edited: The blankets arrived. The “Cranberry” is more “wine” than cranberry: more purplish than the picture shows. The “Rose” is more “country rose” (remember that, from the ’80s?) than the prettier pink shown. The “New Navy” is basically the same as shown.]

Also keep in mind the other reviewers: my blanket didn’t fall apart, but perhaps the quality varies. I’ve found Amazon to be good about returns, though: when something else I ordered was no good, they not only gave me my money back and paid return shipping, they arranged for UPS to come pick it up at my house. —Swistle

Ballpark price: $12 each in twin size—or $9 each if you need four of them (or many books/DVDs/etc. are on the same mix-and-match 4-for-3 promotion)

Can we still be friends if I tell you I HATE vellux blankets? I find them too sweaty. I get so HOT under them, and my body reacts as though it’s encased in Saran Wrap.

Also, I’m only telling you this so that you have more than limited experience. Literally. Because I seem to think that I’m some kind of RANDOM SAMPLING to help you form data.

Do you know, I don’t even KNOW if I like them for my own personal bed! We have a down blanket on ours. But for kids’ beds, where the bedding has to be washed more often, vellux is perfect.

I’m kind of random, as I just came across this website, but I LOVE vellux blankets. I love to use them for my personal bed. In fact, my favorite part of staying at hotels when I was younger was getting to use the vellux blankets that would often be in between the comforter and the flat sheet. So you can bet that as soon as I got my first apartment, this was a MUST for my new bed.

I really like vellux blankets - that’s what I grew up with on my bed, and I loved using them when we traveled. I always have a flashback to being little when I feel them, hah. I’ve turned into a fluffy quilt person as I’ve gotten older, but when I have kids I’ll definitely get vellux for them.

I, too, LOVE vellux blankets because they remind me of hotel stays from when I was younger. I used to lay in bed and pet the blanket… ah, memories. My son has one on his bed (although not this brand) because he has mega allergies, and we can throw it in a hot water wash and dry on high, and it’s no worse for the wear. My husband, however, is in the HATE vellux camp, so we don’t have one on our bed. But I’ve got a queen sized one in the closet, ready to throw on the bed the minute he changes his mind.

Meh… I’m in the “HATE” camp. I like fleece, or down, or something that I can cuddle up with and have drape over me. My MIL has vellux blankets on the beds in her house. Bleah. They’re just so stiff and not warm.

The one thing I like about them is that you can cut them up into roughly 8″x11″ pieces and use them for beading — do your work on a piece and your beads don’t go flying.

I didn’t realize this was you and not Linda, so I was thinking for a minute that Linda was on a blanket-buying frenzy. But you have a lot of kids, so it makes sense. I’m not a vellux fan, but well, whatever.

I love vellux blankets! We call them Nerf Blankets, though. I had a friend that hated them because of the stiffness: “Ewww, they’re so stiff, like some sort of Nerf ball or something!” And I thought that was hilarious so I’ve called them that ever since.
