Hikaru No Go

hikaru.jpgThings I neither like nor understand:
1) Anime
2) The game Go

Thing I nevertheless like:
1) Hikaru No Go, an anime television show about the game Go

Paul, who at one time belonged to a club of people who played Go on purpose, started out watching this alone, on his computer. But our computers are side by side, and before long I started taking peeks, and then I was taking longer peeks, and then I was interrupting to say, “Who’s that guy? Why does he look like a girl?” and “Is he SUPPOSED to look like a girl? Or do they not realize he looks like a girl?”

Like many great shows, the point is the people and their relationships to each other, rather than the actual game. But you’ll learn about the game, too. I am sorry to tell you that if you play it yourself, the pieces do not make the sound/light effects they do on the show, nor will your hand go to slow-mo, nor will your hair blow back in the wind generated by your AWESOME MOVE.

Paul and I both like to watch it in the Japanese with English subtitles; the English dubbing is so! bad! —Swistle

I ordered this book a few years ago. I forgot how I found it, but I thought that it would encourage my stepson to read since it was in the style of the anime shows he likes to watch and different because you actually read it backwards. He didn’t read it, but I enjoyed it. I didn’t know there is a show now. I will look for it.
