Jennifer Wolfe’s Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga
I’m a little embarrassed to admit that although I was in a very positive exercise routine before I got pregnant, I pretty much dropped almost everything in my first trimester as soon as the nausea and tiredness made their effects known. I had all these great plans to continue working out once I felt better, but, well, um . . . then I got sort of distracted by cookies. Lots and lots of cookies.
In the last few weeks, though, I’ve finally started getting off my ass in the evenings in order to follow along with this great yoga DVD. As my third trimester lumbers along, I’ve had more and more discomforts — restless legs, various aches and pains, sleeplessness, etc — that are noticeably reduced by doing some exercise. I tried a few other videos, including the disturbingly perky Denise Austin’s “Fit and Firm Pregnancy Workout”, but this yoga routine by Jennifer Wolfe is by far my favorite.
I know a prenatal video doesn’t sound very interesting to those of you who are not currently pregnant, but I wanted to recommend it anyway because I think it’s actually a really good yoga workout for anyone. Wolfe instructs a surprisingly challenging practice, with many modifications for the second and third trimesters. It’s very good for people who are super-familiar with yoga and beginners alike, and although the video runs a little long for me (I tend to skip a portion in the middle, and I don’t do the entire savasana part at the end) I always feel fantastic after following along with it. Two bendy, well-stretched-out thumbs up!
Ballpark price: $18, although you can rent it from Amazon Unbox for $2

When I clicked on the Amazon link, I found that there was a “short forms” version of this DVD with 15-, 30-, and 45-minute workouts… so perhaps that could be good for those of us who are too crunched for time. The original one said that it was 113 minutes (but I assume some of that is the relaxation at the end).

Dude, the savasana is the best part - don’t skip it!!!
I’ll have to try this, I need a more challenging yoga video (but not as challenging as the crazy marathon guy with weights one I did a few weeks ago).

I love this DVD as well! It’s by FAR my favorite yoga practice I’ve found on DVD during my pregnancy. I teach power yoga twice a week and this workout definitely challenges me. It is about 90 minutes long with savasana, which is the best part. Although I will say that because she talks through the whole thing kind of annoys me so sometimes I turn it off and lay in silence during it.
Congrats on your pregnancy! Namaste!

Thank you SO MUCH for this recommendation. If I can manage to keep up with this throughout my pregnancy, I’m going to be in such awesome shape for labor.
You know, you’ve turned me to all of my favorite exercise shows and videos–turbo jam, oxygen, and now this. Thanks!
