Salvaging Stale Cookies
I shudder to think of it now, but I almost threw out a gallon-sized bag of gingersnap cookies that had inexplicably hardened up. (I had a pair of 2-year-old sous-chefs when I was making the cookies, that’s all I’ll say in the way of blame.) Then, as if by divine intervention, I dipped the abandoned half of one of the stale cookies into my coffee. BLISS.
This idea is older than any of us (next post: you can make FIRE by hitting ROCKS together!!!), but I had never thought of doing it, and it turns out it works. Not only does it soften and freshen and remove the stale taste, it adds COFFEE. Plus, depending on what you dip, your coffee can end up with a delicious sludge at the bottom of it. Mmmmmmmm, SLUDGY. —Swistle

Is there such a thing as SOFT gingersnaps? I tried to crush some a few weeks ago to make a cheesecake crust and I practically had to run them over with my car. And then throw ‘er in reverse and run them over again.
I like this method also for cookies that are SUPPOSED to be hard, like wafers or spritz or whatever. Basically, I am AGAINST hard cookies, I think that is made clear by this comment.

You can also crumble them up and ad them to the crock pot when you make a roast. Viola! Instant sauerbraten! (It sounds strange, but trust me it is delicious.)

Another trick- add a piece or two of soft bread to the ziplock/plastic container and check back the next day. Softness RESTORED. And depending on the level of staleness, the bread will remove that too. (Doesn’t work for extremely stale…. those, dip in coffee!)

When I was little I learned to put a slice of stale cake in a bowl with some milk and eat it like a giant piece of cereal. My husband is appalled by this. Not sure why. Doesn’t matter, anyway. In this house cake never gets stale.

The assistants were probably part of the problem. I’m glad that coffee can be part of the solution! yum.

My BF used to haaaate biscotti. He didn’t understand it. “Why make cookies as hard as rocks ON PURPOSE?!” Why to dip them in coffee of course! Now he can’t get enough.

Yep, gingernuts or gingersnaps or whatever you call them in the States ARE the best to dip.
