Maybelline Superstay Lip Color
I read about Maybelline Superstay lipstick over at Mighty Goods today, and I had to immediately run to the drugstore to try it out. I love the concept of long-wearing lipstick, but I’ve never found a brand that didn’t make me feel like I’d coated my mouth with a particularly drying form of nail polish.
Enter Superstay, the SuperLipstick! This stuff is not half bad. I don’t particularly like applying liquid lipstick with a wand, as is required with the Superstay, but once it’s on it’s ON. And it doesn’t feel like a layer of plastic or like your lips are being chemically peeled, it feels mostly like you’ve got regular old lipstick on, especially after you slick on a little of the provided balm (which acts as a gloss, but a decent gloss, not a freaky sticky gloppy pornstar constantly-peel-strands-of-your-own-hair-from-it-after-a-breeze gloss). I bought the “Orchid” color, which is just right for me—sort of pinkish, sort of mauvish, sort of natural but sort of fancy-pants.
Apparently it can be removed with makeup remover, or with the Maybelline “Superaway” (I am imagining the product branding meeting where they came up with that name: “SuperMakeItGo . . . SuperGetThisShitOffaMe . . . SuperWipeyGone-O . . . Superaway! Yes! SUPERAWAY! IT’S GENIUS!”) lipcolor remover, but I found that I could pretty much wipe it off after it had been on for most of the day (well, after a marinara-drenched pasta dinner, if you must know). It showed no sign of fading beforehand, though, and for someone who hates re-applying lipstick—but loves having some color—that’s pretty awesome.
(Note: I still recommend Revlon’s ColorStay brand for a good medium-wear regular lipstick. This Superstay stuff definitely outlasts the ColorStay, though.)
Two thumbs up for the Superstay, and yay to Mighty Goods for recommending it!

Am I the only person who doesn’t hate re-applying lipcolor? It’s not like it’s that taxing, I guess is what I’m saying, and I like the ritual of putting on lipstick. The whole lipstick-application-as-torture-device thing never really resonated with me, and I’ve always been terrified of long-wearing lipcolor for the reasons you outlined. However, I may–MAY–give this one a whirl, if I can find a color that doesn’t make me look corpse-like.

No, I have no idea what most people’s lipstick re-application preference is. I just find it inconvenient when I’m out and about (the only time I wear lip color, it’s strictly Burt’s Bees otherwise)—I sort of hate putting on lipstick in a public bathroom (and making that self-conscious face in the mirror), and fussing with lipstick at my desk or a restaurant table or wherever seems sort of tacky.

Am already a convert. Per your instructions, you really do have to be deliberate about the application (i.e. Color in the Lines, boys and girls) or Clown make-up will happen, n’ah mean?

Here’s my problem — I can’t seem to keep this kind of “permanent” lipcolor on ANYWAY. The last time I tried to use this two-step kind of thing (which was, admittedly, a few years ago), the glossy part was gone in minutes and that left me with really dryyyyyy lips, which I was constantly, well, futzing with. You know, with my teeth and stuff. In short — I chew it off, and I’m left with a bright, dry line of color outlining my lips.
Am I weird this way? Because all the testimonials and commercials I’ve seen have people happily kissing and blotting and drinking coffee out of white paper cups with their pretty, supple lips and whatnot, but that’s not really my issue with the long-lastingness. I guess it’s hard to produce an appealing commercial with models chewing on their lips…
SO, I guess my question really is: is this stuff actually moisturize-y?

Wow, this stuff is amazing! I bought some last night after reading your review and I am CONVERTED. Right now, I’m sitting at my desk after having eaten an egg & bacon breakfast sandwich and sipping tea, and it looks like I just put it on. Plus, there is nary a trace of it on my cup.
Truly magical. Thanks for the recommendation!

Sometimes I feel like such a sucker, dutifully heading off to CVS to buy beauty products recommended BY A STRANGER. But then I try my new Maybelline Superstay lipstick and realize it’s okay to be a little weird if it means that you get to wear stuff like this! I got two rather neutral colors because I have gotten out of the lipstick wearing habit and didn’t want to shock anyone.
And Jenny, I remember that long-wearing lipstick of which you speak (from years ago), and this is NOT the same.
