Glytone Keratosis Pilaris Kit

kp_kit.jpgI have Keratosis Pilaris, an annoying skin condition that in my case manifests itself as bumpy, red skin on my upper arms. I’d bitch about it, but it could be worse: KP can appear on any body part, including the face. Wah.

My arms tend to look worse in the winter, when they’re not exposed to sunlight and I get lazy about moisturizing, but even in the summer I sometimes feel self-conscious in short sleeves. I’ve tried lots of different moisturizers, scrubbing with loofahs, and after a vaguely embarrassing visit to a dermatologist, some kind of expensive doctor-recommended salve that did no good whatsoever.

I tell you all that so I can go ahead and recommend this new skincare stuff I bought recently, should you be among the KP-afflicted (40 to 50% of the adult population!). It’s from Glytone, who has packaged a “KP kit” comprised of a wash, a moisturizer, and an extremely high-tech, uh, nylon pouf.

The wash and lotion both feature Glycolic acid (the pouf is your standard drugstore bath accessory)—for the last few days I’ve been using the wash on my arms during my morning shower, and applying the lotion afterwards. Verdict? There is a definite, noticeable improvement in the texture of my skin. My arms are smoother than they’ve been in a long time, the only thing that’s ever worked this well in the past was a tanning bed.

Downsides: the wash smells kind of awful, in my opinion. It’s a strong, chemical-y scent, like a drain cleaner or something. Thankfully, the lotion doesn’t have much of a smell at all. Also, the products can potentially make your skin sun sensitive, so you might need to be extra-vigilant with the sunscreen.

Oh, and the other bummer is that this kit costs $50. I can tell that the lotion is going to last forever (a little goes a long way) but the wash might need replacing in a few months. You can buy the wash and lotion separately, but if you want both you may as well get the kit, it’s $2 cheaper.

Thanks for writing about this product. My upper arms get extremely bumpy and as if that weren’t enough, I have a nervous habit of picking at them unconsciously in my sleep so I actually wind up scabby, which is so not lovely. if this product works for me, I will owe you big time :-)

I’m kind of creeped out now: I just ordered their exfoliating bodywash about four days ago and now here you are, talking about it. I’m hoping this does wonders for my skin.

God Bless you Linda…you may have just diagnosed me. I have something on my arms that seems like this and it’s been driving me crazy! My dermatologist just brushed off my concerns.

Yup. I’ve got KP too on my arms, and thighs and shins. Right now got a nasty little.. irritated area on both shins due to shaving over the bumps. Ugh. I may give this a try because the only thing that worked in the past was a horrible sunburn that caused me to peel 3 layers of skin or more x.x

Hi Linda,

I have a recommendation for KP. I’ve been using this stuff for like 6 months, and it’s freaking awesome: http://www.cosmeticscop.com/shop/product.asp?CODE=PC204&PAGETYPE=S

Despite the obnoxious and scary name “Paula’s Choice ACID”, it’s an excellent product…and only $16. I just rub a little on the back of my arms before bed and after a fews days the bumps and redness are gone. Plus, you can also use it for getting rid of blackheads and big ass pores on your face. But be sure to get the gel version and not the lotion. The lotion is smelly and broke me out.

After I had my daughter, KP popped out on my upper arms. Never had it before…thanks for writing about this. Mine was worse in the winter too but the redness continues so I need to try something!

I really reduced my KP with Face Doctor soap.

It also helped to lower the intensity of my rosacea. I don’t know if you can get it in the States, but it’s relatively cheap at $20 and lasts a long time.

I have had this all my life. I was given some lotion from the dermatologist and told in so many words no to be so vain…Needless to say, the lotion didn’t work. A few years later I read that this condition is a vitamin A deficiency. I started drinking a 12oz glass of carrot juice every morning and my arms cleared up lickity-split. Usually there’s a reason you’re not absorbing enough, check out this page, it’s really informative…http://www.ehow.com/how_3950_absorb-vitamin-supplements.html Hope that helps!

I’ve tried a lot of different things through the years. I just bought Amlactin, and it’s been the most effective thing I’ve every tried. I paid $18.99 for a 12 oz. bottle at Fred Meyer (aka Kroger). I guess the true test will be to see how it does this winter. I highly recommend it.

I’m glad to read all of these suggestions for getting rid of the rash, but I also have a suggestion for dealing with it when it won’t go away. I was freaked out about having red, bumpy arms on my wedding day, so I moisturized the crap out of them in the months before. Of course it helped a little, but there was still too much redness. I had recently bought Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs, a product which you can use instead of wearing pantyhose - it evens out your skin tone and makes your legs look gorgeous. Well, it turns out this is a great product for arms too if you have KP. It looks natural enough that no one will notice, and it didn’t come off, even on my pure white wedding gown.

i have that too. i get it on my arms, thighs, and sometimes my face (winter). i found that the dove exfoliating body wash (target, etc.) works wonders with a loofah/pouf, coupled with thick lotion, anything with “butter” in the name will do. it’s a little cheaper than the kit, so i thought i’d just suggest–but hey, if it works, it works! (oh, and for my face, i use clinique seven-day scrub….it’s so bomb. or origins apricot face scrub).

I have it too. I get it on my face, legs, and arms. I’ve tried EVERYTHING! And I just used the Glytone Keratosis Pilaris Kit and it already worked! The only complaint is that I can’t use it on my face.

I have tried KP Duty from DermaDoctor (Sephora) and it worked quite well within a week. It is really expensive and somewhat greasy so I think I may just get a prescription cream from my hottie Skin Doc and let my medical plan pay for it.
