Google Reader and Google’s Homepage

screenshot_reader.pngI just started using Google Reader, and I’m really liking it. Up until now I’ve only been using RSS feeds for things like my Flickr contacts and news sites, but with Google Reader I’m currently subscribed to all the blogs I normally read (well, the ones that provide RSS, anyway) and I can immediately see when they’ve updated, via my personalized Google homepage.

SO COOL.

If you use Google’s homepage, you’ve probably noticed that you can add gadgets that display various types of content. The Google Reader gadget allows you to view your Reader items without leaving your homepage. Click the graphic at the start of this entry to see a screenshot of my homepage, with an RSS-fed post displayed (also holy crap you should see that People.com photo of Courtney Love, it is TERRIFYING).

If you’re new to RSS, this is a great way to get started. Just look for the link—usually in a blog’s sidebar or at the bottom of the page—titled something like “RSS Feed” or “XML Feed” or “Subscribe” or . . . well, there doesn’t seem to be a universally accepted way to refer to this function, but anyway, just copy the link and add it to your Google Reader. Voila, now you’re all informed and up to date and stuff!

Thanks for the heads up on this. I’ve always thought feeds would be so handy but I could never really figure them out. Your last paragraph explains it very well for us “common folk”.

I love my google homepage and reader. I’ve got about a billion tabs. News, Gossip, Traffic and Weather… They even have a couple skins and they change as the day progresses. I have the Tea House theme. It’s so cute.

I am new to this rss feeds stuff. Is it google reader the same as “bloglines.com”? Is one better than the other?

I haven’t used Bloglines, zu, so I can’t comment. I suspect they work similarly, I just like the Google function of adding the feed-reader to my homepage.
