Correction: Downy, not Tide

b000b6mu1001-a3cdpegsiqm61v_aa280_sclzzzzzzz_.jpgThe other day I bought a large bottle of the Simple Pleasures Vanilla & Lavender detergent I liked so much and after running a load of laundry I thought, hey….WTF? It didn’t smell anything like I had remembered it. It smelled nice enough, but it smelled…exactly like soap. Not vanilla, not lavender, just soap.

Oddly enough, the same day I got a very nice email from a PR agency thanking me for recommending Tide Simple Pleasures. Something finally clicked in my thick, thick skull and I realized I had been pimping the wrong product. And after some research, I’m even more confused: apparently the smell-good stuff I really liked was Downy Simple Pleasures Vanilla & Lavender FABRIC SOFTENER.

I have no idea what fabric softener does. All I know is that for a whole bottle’s lifespan, I used it thinking it was detergent. So maybe all along my linens have been unspeakably filthy, yet fresh-smelling and soft?

Sorry about the mixup. You’d think a website limited to products I have used firsthand and really, really like would be free of grievous errors, wouldn’t you? AND YET.

I’ll still buy the Downy, I think, because I do like delicious-smelling towels. But maybe I’ll also, uh, wash them.

The original review has been corrected. God, I’m a dork. Next time I will take a closer look at the freaking label, I promise.

Humm…really? I was kind of wondering. I bought the Simple Pleasures detergent. Yeah, it smelled good but it didn’t permeate the house, just the laundry room. So I bought the dryer sheets too. Still about the same. Soooo noooow…I guess I gotta throw fabric softener in there too? It’s worth a shot I guess.

So you are saying you’ve been using fabric softener instead of detergent? hahaha..thats awesome!

Thats kind of funny because when I was looking for this at Target, I totally picked up the fabric softener and put it in my cart before realizing it wasn’t detergent.

Damn, your clothes must be really soft!

I bought the detergent and the fabric softener and my house smells like Water Lily & Jasmine for days. Of course, I tend to leave all the laundry folded on top of the dryer…but I digress.

I need to grab the dryer sheets, too. Luckily my husband likes all the girly scents, haha.

“Using fabric softener instead of detergent”, that sounds like such a guy thing. BTW, the chicken poop is a hit at the office.

oh my gosh! that totally explains it. after your review, i decided to buy the tide stuff. i have a lavender floral bedspread my m-i-l gave us and washed it with the tide detergent so as not to smell so much like shedding dog mingled with sweet baby boy. i didn’t put it right back on our bed, but just let it air out in an extra room, because holy hannah, it was strong. it smelled like…wood? not bad at all, but definitely not the sweet vanilla and/or lavender aroma i’d expected. my husband came home and was so happy the girly bedspread smelled a little more…manly? so maybe you ought to wash jb’s jacket in the tide stuff after all. :D

Aaarrgh, I’m so sorry I had it wrong. At least the Tide stuff doesn’t smell like wet dog ass, but STILL.

Using fabric softener as detergent? For some reason, I find that dang funny. Thanks for the belly laugh!

That’s so funny! I’ve been using the fabric softener for a long time and LOVE it. I hadn’t purchased the detergent yet, but I put it on my list when you recommended it. I’ll just stick with the fabric softener. It’s so very delicious.

This made me love you.

Not that I didn’t have love for you before; I’ve been lurking along here and in your blog, smiling all the way and sometimes laughing out loud. But THIS. This is crush-worthy material.

Because it is SO something i would do.

[…] I found out about this product’s cousin from Sundry Buzz. I must admit, I couldn’t take the Lavender scent but I took a big whiff of this and was in love. I bought the detergent and the softener. I must caution you, if you purchase the product, do not leave 3 loads of laundry in the laundry room and shut the door. When you open the door later that night, you might be the lucky recipient of an aroma induced headache. I’ve saved the best for last. This is awesome! Cagey suggested this and Alex LOVES it. Upon mentioning it to family members, a few were a little slow to think Alex was old enough for such a device but I wouldn’t trade it for anything and upon seeing how much he adored it, Richard’s Mom has said she might buy one, too! I’m glad you figured out this one, because I tried the Tide detergent and it was ok. Nothing too special, though a subtle nice scent. Now I’m definitely trying the fabric softener because I am in dire need of a smelly-good product to get the incredible STINK out of my husband’s running clothes. This stink is so powerful and persistant that I’ve taken to soaking his nasty clothes in PineSol. No joke. And that takes it’s toll on techno-fabrics.

I’ve got a lot of hope riding on this fabric softener. Is my life really that pathetic?

I’m actually really glad that the original post was mistaken, because the detergent + dryer sheet combo wasn’t strong enough. Now I can add more smelly to my laundry!

So…what is fabric softener used for? When do you add it to the load? How can something as simple as doing laundry be so dang complicated?!

It all makes sense now–I had bought the Tide detergent after reading your review and overall…eh…it was okay, but I hadn’t planned on buying another bottle once the one I have now is gone.
We don’t really use fabric softener (that would require paying attention to the laundry cycles instead of just throwing everything in, pressing the buttons, hoping for the best and remembering several hours later that I had even done laundry that day) even though our washer is supposed to be smart enough to add it at the appropriate time during the cycle after adding it when I throw everything in, but I might buy the dryer sheets and see how it goes.
Thanks for the update though–I just thought that I wasn’t smelling well.

Everyone who is planning to try this….buy the Downy ball along with the fabric softener. You pour some into the ball, throw it in the washer on top of the laundry, and it dispenses at the correct time. Easy!

I clearly care way, way too much about this, but I am happy to report that after liberal use of matching Rose & Violet detergent, fabric softener, and dryer sheets, my stuff is finally starting to smell slightly decent, in spite of the nasty dorm water and dorm plumbing and dorm “cleaning” facilities. :-)

Well, Downy does make Simple Pleasures detergent to match the fabric softener — at least here in GA. I think. I’m almost positive I’ve seen it. I will have to scout out the store and look for photographic proof. :)

Haha, nope, it’s in the Downy section but there is indeed a tiny label on it that says “tide”.

If you want to use fabric softener in the future, btw, you can add it to the final rinse of your cycle, use a downy ball, or dump it into the fabric softener dispenser in your washer at the beginning of the load. (In my washer & in most, it’s the hollow part of the agitator in the middle of the washer.)

This is hilarious. I totally bought the detergent after you recommended it and my boyfriend insisted it smelled like cedar, not vanilla and certainly not lavender. I like the smell, regardless, but he said it made the sheets smell like a hamster’s cage. Oh, well! I am very amused by this.

A little unsolicited advice in exchange for all of yours (which I adore!):

Don’t use fabric softener on your towels! It makes fabric lose absorbency, which is the main point of towels. I love Downy and use it every load but I don’t understand why they use a pile of towels to show how they fluff things cause you should never use fabric softener when washing towels.

whoops. should have said almost every load cause I don’t use it on towels! :)

[…] Three times today, people complimented me on my perfume, telling me each time how lovely I smelled, and my goodness, what beguiling fragrance was I wearing? Dude, an elderly lady said “beguiling” in reference to something about me. Which is perhaps the most awesomely hilarious thing ever, given that the wondrous elixir I was wearing was, indeed, vanilla lavender Downy fabric softener. (The very same kind that Sundry famously used to wash her clothes with, thinking it was detergent, which is just one of a frillion reasons why I love her). And I have to say, I agree with them. I’ve been a Clean Breeze gal for years now, but this lavender vanilla shit is causing a bit of a fracas, what with the unsolicited compliments, and it’s making me want to do more laundry, as it fills my entire house with delightful fragrance, and how wonderful is that? Wonderful! It’s wonderful! Let’s all go wash our clothes! […]

I’ve got to say, I made the same mistake that you did, except I caught it on my first load. Anyhow, I sent a letter of complaint to Procter and Gamble, and they cut me a refund check for $5.60. I sure hope they change that labeling soon. The fabric softener sure smells good, though.

Been there, done that! It makes me happy to know I am not the only nut case on the planet. This reminded me of a time I used a body cream in the shower instead of creamy body wash. I was so ticked off because the stuff would not lather up! What a rip off! False advertising! Ooops - maybe if I had read the label? Another case of mistaken identity due to very similar packaging! Both came in a white tube; had the same label (except for the small print saying which was which), etc. Groan! Maybe that is how they came up with the idea of the in-shower moisturizer?!

I know we should not use softener on towels but I cheat by making up a solution of 16 oz of water and a quarter cup of baking soda. I put this in a screw-top drink bottle and shake well. Then, I put a tablespoon of my Simple Pleasures (flavor of the week now is Rose and Violet) in my softener dispenser and fill up to the line with the water solution. The towels come out smelling wonderful and are still absorbent.
