How to make your house smell good (or bad)
This is going to sound like a ridiculously Martha-y thing to do, but if you simmer a pot of water with some cinnamon tossed in it, and maybe a few cloves, your house will smell really, really good.
However, you should avoid putting the pot on high heat then forgetting all about it while the water boils away and cinnamon burns to the non-stick surface, creating a toxic odor that permeates not only your kitchen, but also, somehow, your shower curtain.
Just a little tip from me to thee.

hmm… I have heard of sprinkling cinnamon on a cookie sheet and baking it on low before, but not boiling it. Also, as a side note, what I did find that worked wonderful this last weekend… I cleaned out the microwave really well with lemon 409. well, after heating up sometihng later, my entire house smelled like lemon poppyseed muffins… YUM-MY!!!

I like to put some cinnamon in with the coffee grounds when I’m brewing coffee. Not only does it taste good, the house smells all coffee-cinnamon morningy.

I buy the bags of mulling spices (to make grog and the like) and boil the shit out of it for a week or more. it smells so nice and lasts long time.
(me smell you long time? )
Yah to Swistle with the cinnamon in the coffee grounds. Indeed, it is lovely.

hahaaa - martha. i did this at a vacation house we were staying at. put it on, then gleefully went for a 2 hour walk on the beach. brilliant. at least that musty beach house smell i was trying to cover up was thoroughly hidden.
anyways, the mulling spices from penzey’s work great too.

MMM I’d love to do this, but my history suggests that I would forget all about it and either make my house smell like hell or alternatively burn the whole thing down. Since having a child my memory is ghastly. Maybe if I set a timer…

Oh for god’s sake. . . I was reading about the cinnamon flavored house. . . and SHOT UP FROM MY CHAIR because I just remembered that I’d left apples and raisins simmering away on Low . . . . only a few (kind of) semi-not-quite-stuck to the bottom of the pot.

Another goodie…If you have a scented jar candle that doesn’t burn down all the way (those damned wicks break or bend in too often), leave the candle jar on the stove. Whenever you heat the burners, the wax melts enough to release the scent.

I have spent years trying to get my house to smell the way I wanted. I’ve done the cloves on the stove, candles, and I spent about 5 years burning tarts.
My friend turned me onto the Wallflowers @ bath & body Works. OMG!!!!!! I would never have bought them on my own because they look like those icky liquid plug-in things, but OH SO GOOD!!!! Cheaper than I spent on tarts (I spent $50/month) and they last for 6 weeks. I have 4 going at all times…Those rank 2nd on my “LIST” (TiVO is 1st)
Sorry to hijack!!!!

I too have spent years, and countless dollars trying to find the perfect thing to make the house smell good. I tried this over the weekend and I am freaking impressed and at the same time incredulous on how easy and cheap. I happened to have sticks and powder, so I used both. It was wonderful.
It really made me wish for fall (along with your cloudy sky pumpkin patch pics) but it was 80 here over the weekend, but I know what I will be simmering from now on.
Thanks for the tip. Have you ever tried any other household spices?

There is nothing like the smell of cinnemon through out the house. It reminds me of beaufiful sunny fall days on Long Island. I usually have at least one or two Yankee Candles burning….but they go very fast. I’m going to try the simmer technique on the stove while leaving my “used Yankee Candle” jars on top! Twice as much scent!! Happy Fall….

Also try using the potato peeler on a orange…then simmer with all the other goodies. It smells fallish and clean (no matter how fast i get get to the laundry…1 husband and 2 little men in the house)-it covers (or absorbs)…all i know is that it smells wonderful!!!

I simmer vanilla, cinnamon, and orange peels and it’s great. I just keep putting water in it all day and it makes my house smell the best. I have two kids and two dogs and you can not smell them not even when they come in from the rain.

I am soooo excited about the vanilla, cinnamon, and orange peels. But, I do have a question will vanilla extract work? Thanks sooo much. I have 3 children, a dog, and a husband. I think the dog stinks my house up and it makes me feel nasty. I am not one to cover a smell because I feel like the root of the problem is still there. But, I’m really struggling. So again thank you.

You can also try boiling plug-ins. Just one will have your entire house smelling wonderful.

I cut up an apple and threw that with ground cloves, ground cinnamon and a bit of vanilla extract in a crock pot. Works like a charm!

My dad likes to get a few oranges and stick cloves all over them, and just puts them in a basket in his room. It smells really good.

My grandma always has a pot of this going when she has company over. She’s bad about forgetting it on the stove (I inherited this “burning things” gene…yay) so she bought a cheap, really small crockpot and keeps it hidden away on a shelf. She just turns it on low right before company arrives and turns it off when they leave.
I’m currently trying to find a way to make my house smell good without really smelling like anything. Make sense? I have a 5 yr old, a grease monkey hubby, 2 dogs and a cat, and then there’s that “burning” gene that smells up my house.

Holy Cow! I just read this about 10 minutes ago and had to try it. I put some water on to boil with some ground cinammon and cloves. Then I ran down the road to the apple trees and picked two apples. When I got back to cut up the apples and put them into the water (which only took about 5 minutes), my entire house smelled great! Adding the apples only made it better! Thanks alot for the great ideas.

I have soiled cinnamon sticks before, but have forgotten about them and burned the pot, so that made the house stink again
I buy the apple cinnamon candles from Michael’s and just one will make my front rooms smell awesome. The Wallflowers from Bath and Body Works are expensive, but they’re great! If you have wood floors and trim, clean them with Murphy’s oil soap and it will smell good for days!
