Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm
In 1999, JB and I moved to Las Vegas for job-related reasons. We didn’t stay long, only a year – my job went the way of most dot-coms by bloating ridiculously, then floating to the surface with little dead X’s for eyeballs – but we enjoyed our time there, exploring surrounding areas like Red Rock and the Grand Canyon and Utah’s Bryce Canyon, people-watching on the Strip, and just soaking up that neverending sun in our suburban backyard.
My skin, however, was in a constant state of shock, having been transported from the drippy, mossy Northwest to the arid Nevada climate. It wasn’t just hot and dry, it was constantly windy, too. My lips chapped, then cracked, then peeled away in painful little flakes for the entire goddamn year.
I bought truckloads of chapsticks, Blistex, Carmex, Lip Boost, DCT, fancy-pants stuff from Origins, jars of Vaseline…I slathered waxes, jellies, camphor, menthol, and my cuticle oil on my lips in a desperate attempt to stop the carnage. Nothing helped.
O, if only I had known about Burt’s Bees back then! I am convinced one tube of the Bees would have cured my Desert Mouth, even in August when it was approximately 382017 degrees outside.
I like a lot of Burt’s Bees products, but the lip balm is far and away the blue-ribbon winner for me. Their website says the balm contains beeswax, lanolin (mmmm, sheepy!) and sunflower oil; other ingredients that give it that distinctive odor and mouth-feel (what? if wine snobs can say “mouth-feel” then SO CAN I) include almond oil, peppermint oil, coconut oil, and rosemary extract.
The balm is supremely soft without being greasy-feeling, and the mint makes your lips feel all cool and zingy. It smells awesome, and it works for hours; I usually re-apply after eating or drinking, rather than every five minutes like with other lip balms.
The Bees is so good, it’s actually a little…well, addicting. I do not leave the house without a Bees. If I find myself at the office and I’ve forgotten my lip balm, I get right the hell in my car and drive to the drugstore to buy one. I try and stash them in various places so there’s always one handy: my bedside table, my purse, my car. Seriously, the panicky sensation of being SANS BEES must be avoided at all costs.
So that is my warning to you: this is the best lip balm on earth, but once you go Bees…well, you know. Just be prepared to buy more than one. Especially if you have a small child in the house.
(I also have the balm in a tin, which I find too waxy and hard, and I have tried the Honey balm, which I didn’t like nearly as much odor-and-tastewise.)

I totally agree with you on the Bees lip balm - it is the best thing to happen to my lips since, well, since Burt’s Bees.
I would love it if they sold it with a little sheer color. DO they sell it with a little sheer color??

Mmm…Love Burt’s… but sometimes i find the mint a little too minty. If my lips are too chapped, then it just hurts.
BTW, E: they DO sell it with color, i’ve seen them on the shelves at Borders. I just checked their website and apparently there are a few different choices. (www.burtsbees.com)

Oh yeah, that stuff kicks ass. I love it. I discovered it on a trip to the mountains in Big Bear, CA and have been hoooked since.
Yes, they offer sheer colors, I have purchased them at Walgreens, CVS…pretty much any store that sells Burt’s Bees.

They do sell the Bees with a little color. It’s what I use on occasions requiring lipstick.
Also, you know what they don’t have in New Zealand? THEY DON’T HAVE THE BEES. Of course I brought three things of it with me, but you best believe I am *hoarding* that shit.

However much I love the Burt’s Bees, I have to say, I am from the desert, and the two do not play well together. Once I left a tube in the car (in June!) and when I hopped in and tried to refresh my lips, a whole tubes worth of molten Bees poured out onto my pants. FYI, you cannot remove molten Burts Bees from pants. And if you are driving along and using your finger to scrape some off of your pants and onto your lips, it just looks filthy from the car in front of you. Filthy!

I love the Bees too! But I’ve just recently become in love with another…I discovered the chapstick sold at Jamba Juice and Bees has taken a back seat. I can’t get enough of the Jamba Juice Lip Balm…

Oh hell yah. Me and the Burts go waaaay back. I love it, Love it, LOVE IT. I live for that tingle. Okay not really, but wow. What a tingle.
(Wasn’t there an icecream cookie sandwich called a Love it years ago?)
I also use the Burts on a sore chappy snotwiped nose. It goes all over and up and in the nostrils and it feels gooooooooooood.
I also do.not.like the gritty shitty honey one. Lame.
And, you are right about the boys snatching the BUrts. I put Elliot in the tub day before yesterday and what came floating by? Why, a tube of Burts looking very proud and nautical like. Elliot musta grabbed onto one at some point and hey, this kid aint dumb. He knows when to hold onto somethin’ good!

Burt’s Bees is my favorite lip balm too. I love almost everything else they make too — BB soaps and toners and moisturizers are so excellent.
I didn’t like the texture of the balm in a tin either, and found the colors of the tinted versions to be a little garish for my complexion, but when the original is so good, why even try to mess with perfection?

I have only ever tried the lip balm in the tin, and it was crappy enough to throw me off of all Burt’s Bees product. You did me a huge favor with the bare minerals makup so I will take your advice and try the tub lip balm from Burt. I have noticed all sorts of Burt’s products at the Cracker Barrel. Half store. Half restaurant. 100% country. *snort*

I too have a serious phobia about being parted from my lip balm. So imagine my concern when we recently went on vacation and I was unable to have lip balm throughout five hours of flying! The thought still makes me shudder. I did come up with a work around. Before I left home, I smeared some lip balm on a piece of plastic wrap, folded it up and put it in my bag. It made it through security, and I was able to use it throughout the flight and remain panic free. Sadly obsessive I know.

Addicted? um yeah. I was on the carmex train for a while, but someone showed me the error of my ways. Now I have burt’s in every bag I own and a few placed around my (studio) apartment. I also managed to get my good friend hooked, which works well for me in case I (gasp) forget my own. She’s always willing to share!

Love Burt’s. They make a new one that is honey-flavored. It works well and smells soooo good.

I own at least six tubes of Burt’s Bees lip balm. This is a conservative estimate. I thought no lip shmear could be more addictive than carmex, but DAMN. If I leave the house without that stuff, I’ve wandered over to the drugstore before I even notice where my feet are taking me. Good stuff.

Oh, you may think Burt’s is the stuff, but you don’t know.
You’ve never put Chicken Poop on your lips. Now THAT is some fine stuff.
