Philosophy Hope In A Jar

hopeinajar.jpgSomeday, hopefully far in the future, when I lay on my deathbed, I hope I don’t regret the amount of time I spent throughout my life methodically removing oils from my skin with a variety of cleansing products, only to immediately rub them back in with a variety of moisturizing products.

(Also, I hope my tired, elderly face is both remarkably resilient for my age, and free of breakouts.)

For a while after Riley was born and it wasn’t as easy to get over to Sephora, I ran out of my tried-and-true Hope in a Jar moisturizer and just used a drugstore brand instead. I couldn’t see a big difference so figured I had fallen prey to the Fancy Goo hype, but after a few weeks had gone by I did start to notice a subtle change in my complexion. It was just…a little more dull, I guess. The parts of my face that get dry got dryer, and the parts that get oily turned into an Exxon-level disaster.

I switched back and right away my skin felt better, and I think it actually looks better. This stuff doesn’t irritate my rosacea, and it doesn’t leave my face feeling like it’s got a layer of grease on it. When I put it on in the morning I can feel my whole face relax, like a plant that’s just been watered.

The product itself is really nice, too - you only need a very small amount, and the texture is sort of like shaving cream rather than a viscous goo. I will say that it’s got a distinctive smell that not everyone might love – to me it’s like a medicinal-lavender combo, which I don’t mind at all – so if you have a chance to check out a tester jar, give it a try and take a whiff or two.

Hope in a Jar is the only skin junk that JB will use, and this is a man who washes his face with shampoo. My point being that he thinks all lotions and cleansers are for GURLZ ONLY, so the fact that he occasionally endures the emasculating sensation of applying moisturizer is actually very high praise.

I like a lot of philosphy’s products, which is kind of unfortunate because they’re not exactly cheap. For me, though, this is one product that’s crossed the line from ‘luxury’ to ‘necessity’. I mean, in the non-nutritonal-or-oxygen sense of it being a necessity. Ahem. You know.

I’m fond of Night of Olay firming cream (2 oz for about $6), but I have to say the smell of it is poor. It SMELLS the way sleeping in a white mask and rollers LOOKS. Lavender-medicinal sounds way better, and also I LOVE the name of it.

Linda, I don’t have a comment about philosophy products, but I just wanted to say that I LOVE this new site of yours. Awesome. :)

Moisture-wise I’m a simple Cetaphil girl but mmm, nothing makes me happier than philosophy shower gels. Word of caution - they say you can use them as shampoo/conditioner, but I tried it once while traveling and the results were incredibly assy.

Love all your sites, by the way! I’d love us to be playground mom friends if I didn’t live in Boston.

I love Philosophy’s line-I wish they’d bring back the “Seven Day Juice Fast” as their pink grapefruit soap was to die for. Now, I can’t say I’ve had the same results as the previous Melissa as far as the shampoo/conditioner but I won’t use it as daily haircare (it’s just a little too drying for my liking). In a pinch though, it’s great.

I love Philosphy - especially the Baby Grace body lotion. It doesn’t smell like baby powder or anything that obvious, but it has a clean baby sort of smell.

Actually I may have just proven myself a dolt. While perusing the philosophy site I noticed that the shower gels only promise to serve as shampoo, not conditioner too. It’s totally possible that I thought I was cool with my Swiss-Army-knife-of-cleansing-products and the bad results were due to lack of conditioning.

hope in a jar is the best! you are right. it has the perfect texture. i’m fond of the scent, but one of my sister’s tried a jar and couldn’t take it even though she loved the results. last year around christmas they gave out a 3oz shower gel in gingerbread and it was so refreshing! i bought a big jar around new year’s and i still have it since i reserve it for those need-a-pick-me-up shower days.

I had been holding off on buying this, but your write-up inspired me. I order this (and some other stuff) from Sephora.com and it arrived yesterday. I used it for the first time this morning. So far, so good. love the site!
